A pot on a gas stove by a kitchen window

Stories / Kitchen

Dad still cooks for himself. What if he leaves the stove on?

Mr Fong, 81, lives alone and still cooks his own lunch. His daughter Rachel works nearby.

“He still cooks his own lunch. If anything catches fire, we'll know.”

Rachel, his daughter

What happened

One pan forgotten on the stove could start a fire.

  1. Flames rising from a pan on a gas stove
    12:35 pm

He dozes off in his chair. The pan left on the stove catches fire.

  2. Seconds later

Rachel's phone shows a fire alert. So does Mdm Aminah's next door.

  3. A woman standing in a sunlit kitchen
    12:40 pm

Mdm Aminah wakes him, turns off the gas and covers the pan.

What you can do

  1. Keep a working smoke alarm too. SORVA alerts the family; it isn't a smoke alarm.
  2. Keep a lid or a fire blanket by the stove. Never put water on an oil fire.
  3. Use a kitchen timer, and stay in the kitchen while anything is frying.
