An older man and his daughter talking at the dining table

Stories / Care at home

Dad is home from hospital and won’t wear the alarm button. Now what?

Mr Singh, 80, is home after a hip operation. He took his alarm pendant off on day two.

“To him it's just a light. He doesn't even think about it.”

Priya, his daughter

What happened

An alarm he won't wear can't help him.

  1. A kitchen with high open shelves
    Day 9, 6:15 pm

Reaching for a high shelf, he ends up on the kitchen floor.

  2. 20 seconds later

Priya's phone shows an alert. No device to wear, no button to press.

  3. A hand holding a phone by a front door, ready to leave
    6:30 pm

Priya calls him on speaker and comes straight over.

What you can do

  1. Ask the hospital what to avoid in the first weeks, and for how long.
  2. Move everyday things to waist height so there's no reaching or bending.
  3. Keep walking aids where they are actually used, not in a corner.
