A smiling older man at home

Stories / At night

I work night shifts. Who is there for Dad while I’m at work?

Mr Yeo, 84, lives with his son Marcus, a nurse who works night shifts.

“I can focus on my shift again, instead of checking my phone every hour.”

Marcus, his son

What happened

From 8 pm to 8 am, Mr Yeo is at home on his own.

  1. A dim kitchen at night, a mug on the stove
    1:50 am

He gets up for a drink, feels faint and sinks to the floor.

  2. 20 seconds later

Marcus sees the alert on his ward. So does his aunt, two floors down.

  3. A front door lit by a lamp at night
    2:05 am

His aunt, Mdm Seah, lets herself in and stays with him.

What you can do

  1. Before each shift, check that his phone is charged and within reach of the bed.
  2. Add someone who lives close by to the alert list for the hours you are at work.
  3. Light the way to the kitchen and the toilet with low night lights.
