An older man cooking at a stove

Stories / Kitchen

Grandpa cooks his own supper late at night. What if he leaves the pot on the stove?

Mr Chong, 86, lives with his grandson Ryan's family and cooks his own supper.

“Grandpa still cooks his supper, and we sleep soundly again.”

Ryan, his grandson

What happened

The family is asleep by eleven, and Mr Chong often cooks after midnight.

  1. A blue gas flame on a stove, close up
    12:40 am

He leaves soup on the stove and falls asleep in front of the television.

  2. Seconds later

Ryan wakes to a fire alert on his phone. His mother receives it too.

  3. A dark kitchen with a window and a sink
    12:43 am

Ryan turns off the gas, covers the pot and opens the window.

What you can do

  1. Keep a working smoke alarm in or near the kitchen. SORVA alerts the family; it is not a smoke alarm.
  2. Keep a lid or a fire blanket within reach of the stove.
  3. Suggest a kettle or a microwave for late-night snacks.
