An older woman sitting on her sofa at home

Stories / Lives alone

Mum lives alone. What if she can’t get up and no one knows?

Mdm Lee, 82, lives alone. Her daughter Grace works full days across town.

“I don't call to check on her any more. I call to talk.”

Grace, her daughter

What happened

Between Grace's calls, a missed call could mean a nap, or a fall.

  1. An empty green armchair by a sunny window
    2:40 pm

Mdm Lee feels dizzy, sits down on the floor and can't get up.

  2. 20 seconds later

Grace's phone shows an alert. So does Mr Ong's next door.

  3. A red front door with a metal gate
    2:50 pm

Mr Ong has a spare key. He is with her in minutes.

What you can do

  1. Leave a spare key with a neighbour you trust, and tell the family who has it.
  2. Agree on a daily check-in time, a call or a message, so a missed one means something.
  3. Keep a phone where she could reach it from the floor, not only on a high table.
