An older woman walking slowly with a cane

Stories / Helper's day off

Our helper has left and the new one arrives next month. Who looks after Mum until then?

Mdm Chan, 88, walks with a frame. Her helper of six years has just gone home.

“The weeks between helpers used to worry us most. This time we had a plan.”

Jonathan, her son

What happened

For four weeks, Mdm Chan is alone every weekday until her son comes home.

  1. A walking frame with four wheels, standing on its own
    3:15 pm

Rising from her afternoon rest, she loses her balance beside the bed.

  2. 20 seconds later

Jonathan sees the alert in a meeting. So does Mrs Ramasamy next door.

  3. A younger hand gently holding an older hand
    3:25 pm

Mrs Ramasamy uses the spare key and stays until Jonathan arrives.

What you can do

  1. Plan the gap early: who visits, who calls, and who holds a spare key.
  2. Ask relatives or a neighbour to each take one day a week.
  3. Look into a day centre or short-term home care for the weeks in between.
