An older woman with grey hair, drinking from a cup

Stories / Memory loss

Mum has early dementia and forgets to eat. What if she faints while we are at work?

Mdm Teo, 79, has early dementia. She lives with her daughter Hui Min, who works days.

“We cannot be there for every meal, but we will always know if she needs us.”

Hui Min, her daughter

What happened

On some days Mdm Teo forgets lunch, and by afternoon she is weak and dizzy.

  1. Bowls of food left on a table
    2:30 pm

Having missed lunch, she feels faint and collapses beside the sofa.

  2. 20 seconds later

Hui Min receives the alert at work. Her brother Kelvin receives it too.

  3. A man making a phone call at his desk
    2:45 pm

Kelvin, who works nearby, reaches her first and calls her doctor.

What you can do

  1. Set gentle meal reminders: a call at lunchtime, or a note on the table.
  2. Leave simple food and water where she will see them.
  3. Tell her doctor about missed meals and dizzy spells.
