An older man walking beside a lake in a park

Stories / For yourself

After my fall, my children want me to move in with them. How can I stay in my own home?

Mr Pillai, 78, a retired teacher, lives alone. He fell at home last year.

“I stayed in my own home, and my children stopped asking me to move.”

Mr Pillai

What happened

He wanted to stay at home, and his children needed to know he was safe.

  1. A pair of brown shoes on a wooden floor in the morning sun
    6:50 am

Dressing for his morning walk, he loses his footing and cannot get up.

  2. 20 seconds later

His daughter Kavitha receives the alert. So does his walking partner, Mr Hassan.

  3. Two older men walking side by side down a street
    7:05 am

Mr Hassan lets himself in with the spare key and calls Kavitha.

What you can do

  1. Keep up your daily walk: strength and balance are your best protection against falls.
  2. Ask your doctor or a physiotherapist for simple balance exercises.
  3. Give a trusted friend or neighbour a spare key, and add them to your alert list.
